I've never been the biggest fan of change. But as I look to bolster my coverage of addiction and drug policy, I feel a rebrand would be beneficial.
In an ode to Baltimore's nickname "Mobtown," an unflattering moniker to some but a representation of the grit of Baltimore to me, my writing will now be published under Mobtown Mag, or Mob Mag for short.
The logo, a skull of a Baltimore oriole, was drawn by my wonderful girlfriend, Hannah.
These themes represent the city I proudly call home. And that city is also home to thousands of people whose stories I strive to tell – drug users and their loved ones navigating through an unprecedented overdose crisis.
Aside from some recent venerable projects, local outlets have for too long failed to capture the struggles and inequities experienced by drug users — and many attempts to do so manifest in cold, ill-informed reporting.
My goal as a journalist and recovering addict is to change that. And this new venture encapsulates a radical, but fair approach to journalism that's driven by harm reduction and compassion.
I expect this rebrand to help me accomplish the goal of shedding light on the crisis and those impacted by it to the best of my ability. All my coverage areas will be the same, but articles will be more frequent.
As this change is implemented, I've switched my writing platform from Substack to Ghost, which will enhance my content visually while making the writing process smoother.
My subscribers, paid and free, have been exported to this new venture. The free option remains, and those who have been grateful enough to pay for my content can do so at no extra charge.
Please let me know if anything has changed for you as a paid subscriber. It will be promptly resolved.
Most importantly, thank you for supporting me for more than a year. There will be much more to come.
A quick teaser: This week, expect an editorial about the extreme lack of transparency regarding health information in Baltimore.
